However, it’s particularly important to pay close attention to your teeth and gums during this time. The hormone progesterone can be raised up to 10 times higher than normal during pregnancy, affecting the body’s response to toxins and making it more susceptible to developing periodontal disease, also known as pregnancy gingivitis.

Some pregnant women develop a growth on their gums known as a pregnancy granuloma — red nodules usually found on the upper gums. While they are not dangerous, they can cause discomfort. Other oral health problems may include dry mouth and tooth erosion as a result of constant exposure to acid from severe morning sickness. There are a number of preventative treatments our team can provide for children. Fluoride applications are a safe and effective way to protect growing teeth from decay, with fluoride painted onto the tooth surface to help mineralise enamel. Tooth-coloured fissure sealants can also be applied to the biting surfaces of children’s teeth to help prevent decay. Treating children from a young age also allows the dentist to spot early signs of underbites, crossbites or overbites developing, meaning any issues can be addressed sooner. Prevention is always better than cure, so we recommend booking regular check-ups for your child.
