Common questions about dental check-ups

Your dental check-up frequently asked questions answered

How often should I have a dental check-up?

Many adults benefit from a check-up every six months, although your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your oral health.

What happens during a dental check-up?

Your dentist checks your teeth, gums, and mouth for signs of decay, gum disease, or wear, and provides advice on hygiene and diet.

Do children need regular dental check-ups?

Yes. Routine visits help children develop good oral hygiene habits and allow early intervention if needed.

What if I feel nervous about visiting the dentist?

Our team takes a calm, understanding approach and explains each step clearly. You can learn more about our approach on the our team page.

Do check-ups include hygiene appointments?

Many patients choose to combine both for a complete preventative care visit. Details are available on our dental fees page.

Why are dental check-ups important during pregnancy?

Pregnancy can be an exciting time and while you have so much to plan for, your oral health may be one of the last things you’re thinking about. However, it’s particularly important to pay close attention to your teeth and gums during this time. The hormone progesterone can be raised up to 10 times higher than normal during pregnancy, affecting the body’s response to toxins and making it more susceptible to developing periodontal disease, also known as pregnancy gingivitis.

What dental problems can occur during pregnancy?

Some pregnant women develop a growth on their gums known as a pregnancy granuloma — red nodules usually found on the upper gums. While they are not dangerous, they can cause discomfort. Other oral health problems may include dry mouth and tooth erosion as a result of constant exposure to acid from severe morning sickness. If you are pregnant, we recommend that you come to the practice for a thorough check-up so that we can help you to have a healthy and happy pregnancy.

Why should children visit the dentist from a young age?

As dental professionals, we believe in preventative dental care and encourage our patients to bring their children to the practice from an early age. Regular check-ups from a young age help ensure children do not suffer from untreated dental decay, which can have damaging effects on their growing dentition. Studies have shown that the younger a child is when attending their first dental appointment, even if just for a check-up, the more likely they are to have a positive experience and grow up unafraid of the dentist. Our team takes special care to make children feel safe and looked after.

What preventative dental treatments are available for children?

There are a number of preventative treatments our team can provide for children. Fluoride applications are a safe and effective way to protect growing teeth from decay, with fluoride painted onto the tooth surface to help mineralise enamel. Tooth-coloured fissure sealants can also be applied to the biting surfaces of children’s teeth to help prevent decay. Treating children from a young age also allows the dentist to spot early signs of underbites, crossbites or overbites developing, meaning any issues can be addressed sooner. Prevention is always better than cure, so we recommend booking regular check-ups for your child.

I had a really positive experience at Apex Dental Surgery. Dr Shervin and hygienist Rosie were extremely kind, gentle, and took the time to explain everything clearly, which made me feel very comfortable. The receptionists are also lovely - always welcoming, calm, and helpful from the moment I arrived, which set the tone for the whole visit. The practice is clean, professional, and very well run. I felt genuinely looked after and specifically asked if I could continue my treatment with this team because of how at ease they made me feel. Highly recommend.

Ali has been my dentist for three years now and has been by far the best I’ve ever had! He has a great bedside manner, good sense of humor and talks you through everything he is doing . He is so thorough, I have every confidence in him. Totally puts my mind at ease and makes going to the dentist a somewhat nice experience .Thank you Ali
