Studies show that mouth cancer is on the increase and that early detection dramatically improves the chances of recovery. Late detection of mouth cancers has resulted in a higher proportion of deaths per number of cases than breast cancer, cervical cancer or skin melanoma, with around 2,700 deaths per year in the UK. Mouth cancer screening is a simple procedure carried out at a dental practice and plays an important role in identifying concerns at an early stage.
Mouth cancer screening includes a detailed review of your oral health history to identify any potential risk factors, followed by a thorough examination of the outside of your mouth, head and neck using observation and touch. Your dentist will also carry out an internal examination of your mouth, including the inside of your cheeks and under your tongue. In some cases, a handheld scanning device may be used to examine any lumps or lesions. Any findings that are unclear will be referred to a specialist consultant for further assessment. Yearly screening is recommended. If you notice any sores, lumps or long-term ulcers in your mouth, no matter how small, it is important to have them checked. Because smoking is strongly linked with many forms of cancer and other dental problems, patients are always encouraged to stop smoking.
